History and Past Champions

With the goal of creating a prestigious amateur tournament in St. Augustine, an interested group formed in early 2004 to make that goal a reality. With the presence of the World Golf Village and the new enthusiasm for golf locally, St. Augustine seemed like the ideal place for a tournament for better amateur and collegiate players from around the country.

The St. Augustine Amateur is now a national event. The competition is conducted over 54 holes of individual stroke play with a field limited to 78 players whose golf resumes and tournament experience have earned them a spot in the field. The winner receives a replica of our trophy designed by Heritage Creations of Glens Falls, NY, and top finishers receive Golfweek/amateurgolf.com World Ranking Points.
The St. Augustine Amateur is a walking only tournament. Playing in threesomes, it makes for an enjoyable round for the players. Our local First Tee chapter provides approximately 25 caddies for the field, and many players bring their own. The forecaddies, walking referees and standard bearers in the final groups Sunday add to the experience.

Net proceeds of the event will go to benefit The First Tee of St Johns County. The First Tee of St. Johns County is designed to impact the lives of young people by providing programs that build character, instill core-values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. The Chapter occupies a three-hole facility and clubhouse, and is open seven days a week for play. Through its year round junior membership, after-school, and special event programming, the St. Johns Chapter annually provides instruction and playing time for over 850 St. Johns County children, ages 5-17.

It is our vision to conduct a championship which can be described as the “best expression of the game” – one which provides a memorable, challenging and uplifting experience for the players, volunteers and all those who are associated with the tournament.
