Volunteer Information

The St. Augustine Amateur relies heaviliy on the help of volunteers to help make the event a success.  Volunteers are instrumental for making it a memorable experience for all participants involved in the tournament.  Secondly, it is because of the help of volunteers that the St. Augustine Amateur can contribute to The First Tee of St. Johns County a non-profit youth development organization that teaches young people valuable life skills and character education through the game of golf.

Volunteers can help in the following areas:

Registration

  • Stuff player registration packets prior to tournament
  • Greet and check-in each player
  • Take picture of each player with player
  • Verify current player data
  • Answer player questions

Signage, Tents, and Tables

  • Contact sponsors and verify whether or not each sponsor has a sign
  • Pick up signs from those sponsors who have them
  • Order signs for those sponsors who do not have them
  • Set up table at Scoring Tent and Volunteer Check-In tent
  • Clean and return tables

Scoreboard

  • Secure all necessary utensils
  • Prepare score sheets for start of first round
  • Put up sheets on score board prior to start of first round
  • Cover and remove score board with plastic in the event of rain and at end of each day

Scoring Tent

  • Secure all necessary utensils, i.e. calculators, pencils
  • While player is present, use calculator to verify score card is accurate, and verify each score card has 2 signatures

Driving Range Attendent

  • Stuff range balls in bags prior to start of each round
  • Deliver bags of balls to driving range
  • Pick range and clean balls after last group is out
  • Re-stuff bags for next round

On Course Scoring

  • Position golf cart at assigned position when instructed; get cart in position so that all players must pass by the golf cart before proceeding to next hole
  • As players complete the last hole, use the score sheet to record each player’s score from the previous 3 holes
  • Call in scores

Forecaddies

  • Position golf cart at assigned position, so that players’ drives are clearly visible but cart does not interfere with players progress
  • Use hand signals to indicate safe or errant shots. Use “baseball” safe signal for a safe shot. Use arms and hands to point to shot that is in a hazard or out-of-bounds.

Tee Box Spotter

  • Provide handsignals to forecaddies helping them identify the direction in which the ball was hit

On Course Refreshments

  • Load all coolers and fruit on golf carts and deliver first to #1 and #10 tee boxes, then deliver to pre-determined positions on course. Drive in opposite direction of players.
  • Monitor coolers and fruit throughout the day and re-fill as necessary

Course Maintenance – Bunkers

  • From 7:00 – 8:30am Friday, Saturday and Sunday rake all bunkers before play begins

Course Maintenance – Divots

  • From 12:30 – 4:30pm Friday and Saturday fill in divots with sand after each round

Sunday Standard Bearer

  • Sunday, 9:00am, while carrying standard walk with assigned group and maintain current score of each player in group until end of final round

Media

  • Write press releases regarding the St. Augustine Amateur prior to tournament, during play and after the final round
  • Submit press releases to St. Augustine Record and other golf media
  • Take pictures during each round of play
  • Update the St. Augustine Amateur Tournament website with pictures and data

Long Drive Contest

  • Conduct long drive contest and announce winner

Starter

  • Announce each player

Rules

  • Administer rules and answer questions during tournament play
